A lavish restaurant that flatters to deceive
This is the first post in my restaurant review sojourn and I decided to start with Jewel of Nizam, a restaurant I visited with my wife and a group of friends in 2019. We'd read a bit about the restaurant in the past, especially its construction and decided to go one day.
Restaurant Location
The restaurant is located within the premises of the Golconda resort with a brilliant view of the the Gandipet lake nearby. The construction is unique in the sense that it sits on top of a tower, a concept still largely alien to India. We went there for lunch and the royal feeling associated with the restaurant was there for us all to see. The view from the restaurant was awesome too overlooking the Gandipet lake with exquisitely set tables and cutlery.Jewel of Nizam atop the minar |

Food
I should mention the staff who were extremely courteous and made sure we were always attended to. The restaurant has a set menu for veg and non-veg options and the staff explained the menu to us in great detail. However, that is about all that is good about this place that I can think of. The food unfortunately was below par. I opted for vegetarian set menu and will only talk about the same. It began with a welcome drink and a soup which tasted fine. Then came the starters which included the likes of paneer and kebab and were actually good. However, that was when it started going downhill. The main course was a disaster. I was served five different curries including Dal Makhani, all of which tasted poor along with three types of Indian bread which had become cold by the time they were served.

The biryani too was a disappointment. The worst part was that the desserts weren't good either. One of the desserts had white onion in it. Maybe it makes for a good dessert and others could have differing opinions on this, but I didn't enjoy it at all. To be honest, when you're offering a set menu you must serve good options to guests. While we didn't discuss it in detail but everyone in the group was disappointed with the food that was served irrespective of our preferences.
Overall Review
Jewel of Nizam is certainly one of those few restaurants where guests are well taken care of and service is top notch. The view of the lake and surroundings from the restaurant is something worth experiencing but the food is major letdown especially considering the charges which go upwards of Rs. 2.5k per head. All things considered, if you're looking for a lap of royalty, give it a shot but don't expect bang for your buck in terms of food.Rating - 3/5
